CRPP: "Condemn the detention of Hurriyat Leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani"

CRPP Press Release, (1 March 2011):Condemn the detention of Hurriyat Leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani by the Special Cell in Delhi Airport!

The Committee for the Release of Political Prisoners (CRPP) strongly condemns the detention of Tehreeq-e-Hurriyat leader at the New Delhi airport. He was on his way back to his home in Srinagar after a prolonged stay for medical treatment.  This devious act of the Special Cell is deliberate in its intention to sensationalise the detention of Mr. Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

In fact, if one had noticed, the preparation for this was being done for the last fortnight by the Special Cell with planted stories about Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

There were also stories about his 'unwillingness' to cooperate with the Special Cell. This was again a deliberate attempt to prepare the ground for this drama that was enacted before the public to further vitiate insinuations on Syed Ali Shah Geelani who is unequivocally the most consistent voice expressing the political aspirations of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination.

On the 28 February 2011 Mr. Geelani had already informed the Special Cell that they can approach for the proposed enquiry that they wanted to do with him. The time for this meeting was also fixed at his residence at 11.30 am. But despite waiting for the whole day none of the Special Cell officers turned up. Instead what they choose to do was in this cheap publicity stunt bordering on the sensational so as to add to the grist mill in the media which decides whether a person should be hanged, condemned to life or burnt at stake!

We at the CRPP strongly condemn this detention of Mr. Syed Ali Shah Geelani and demand the Special Cell to release him unconditionally.

Gurusharan Singh, President
