Odisha: Nov 21 conference in Bhubaneswar to target Indian state's war on people

Cultural Resistance: War on People in Corporate Resistance, Bhubaneswar, Odisha (Orissa)

21st November 2010.

Today, the mineral resources, the earth, the water, the forest of Odisha- the source of livelihood of the common men- are being taken over by the corporate with the naked support of the state. Rather, the state has raised its gun to defend the interest of the corporate against the poor.

So, we witness the blue water of Chilika turning red with the blood of fisher folks; the spill of adivasi blood unto the earth of Kashipur and Kalinganagar for Birals and Tatas; the destruction of Niyamgiri mountain of Dongria Kondh for Vedanta; attacks on the peasants in the plains of Jagatsihgpur for POSCO; threat to the jungle land of adivasis in Keonjher for Arcelor Mittal; diversion of Hirakud dam water to a number of companies leaving the peasants high and dry.

24 April Public Meeting : Indian State's War on People and the Assault on Democratic Voices

Forum Against War On People

3PM-8PM, 24TH APRIL 2010

Gandhi Peace Foundation, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg, ITO, DELHI

Operation Green Hunt is an unprecedented military offensive on the people: Indian government has been at war with the people of Kashmir and the North East for decades. In the name of 'national security and integrity' and 'national interest', the government has been trying to crush the democratic aspirations of these oppressed nationalities with state terror. Through Operation Green Hunt, the government has brought its war on people to the heart of India. If the total number of government forces presently engaged in this Operation is taken in its entirety (including the paramilitary forces and the state police) it comes close to a quarter of a million (2.5 lakh).

Call for Convention on Azadi: The Only Way in Kashmir

The happenings in Kashmir over the past few months need no retelling. The situation has deteriorated to extreme levels with unarmed civilians, mostly young teenagers, being killed by the Indian armed forces with impunity. The toll from June 11 has reached 109, with the numbers of injured, maimed, blinded much more. Curfews, bullets, tear smoke have become a routine to suppress the peaceful democratic protests.

Do you know?
  • According to the Indian government, they have deployed 150,000 troops in India's central and eastern states. Independent witnesses say the numbers are closer to 250,000. This is more than the number of US troops in Afghanistan. This is war on the Indian people.

March 5th Press Invitation : Interaction with Media on Green Hunt

Today the Central and Eastern regions of India are witnessing the largest police/paramilitary deployment unprecedented in the history of independent India or even in the days preceding it. All independent sources acknowledge the deployment of around 250,000 paramilitary/police armed to the teeth in these regions while the government comes out with a conservative estimate of around 150,000. This military build up is a calculated assault on the poorest of the poor of the peoples in these regions-the tribals.

February 27 Press Conference Opposes the Vilification Campaign against Civil Rights and People's Organizations

Ever since the filing of the chargesheet against Mr. Kobad Ghandy on 19.02.10 before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police a deliberate profiling of the civil rights organisations and other people's organisations as espousing the cause of the CPI (Maoist) is being planted in a section of the media by the investigating agencies. This is ostensibly on the basis of the specific mention of these organisations in the charge sheet.

The manner in which the profiling is intended to vitiate the public space is inimical to any democratic protest/dissent against the policies of the government. It projects ominous portend towards subversion of constitutional freedoms and engraftment of fascist/intolerant polity for the future by muzzling entire space for democratic ex-pression.
